A popular thing to do with homeschoolers and afterschoolers is studying United States geography with their kids. They go through and learn all about the United States in different ways.
Here’s the primary United States geography ideas I’ve seen:
Postcard study-They ask for postcards and when they get a postcard for a new state they study that state.
Recipe study-Eat snacks/meals/desserts from the different states
Alphabetical Order
Chonrological Order- for when they entered the union
I’ve done both all 3 to some extent or another, and we really enjoyed it, and almost always we got bogged down about halfway through.
For the sake of this post I’m going to go through and divide up these United States geography ideas by area (I’ll admit it’s partially because that’s how my pictures are done)
I plan to name one post per state, there’s a lot of ideas out there.
Northeast United States geography ideas
Southeast United States Geography ideas
Central United States Geography Ideas
Southwest United States Geography Ideas
Hawaii (only because this is where they are in the picture of the map)
Northwest United States Geography Ideas
Well, that’s all 50 states for the United States Geography Ideas. That took forever to get together, and that’s with two people essentially saying, “Here’s my geography folder, have at it.” So many posts….

Oh this is FANTASTIC! we have been learning about the states for several years. We are doing them in alphabetical order. I have linked up our most current post (NC) and then Alabama and Mississippi, too b/c I didn’t see that you had any links for those two states. sorry my pic I chose for AL didn’t work, but the learning is still great. We hope you enjoy taking a look at our states studies. At the top of our blog is a header called “states study” where you can find all of them.
I think your blog was the one that gave me the idea of getting them done in ABC order. I’ll add in your Alabama and Mississippi posts, thanks for pointing out they were missing. I’m surprised I only missed those two.
I like studying the states regionally, or by following a particular path (Oregon Trail, for instance).
That’s an amazing resource! Next time we study the states, maybe we will follow the path of quests in Percy Jackson’s series. They’ve been practically everywhere, I think!
Loads of fun ideas! This must have taken you forever to put together, but thanks for doing it, and thanks for including my blog. 🙂
Your blog was included quite a lot….. This post took forever to get done.
Thanks for including us in your links for the states study. What a great resource you have provided.
