Paul’s Third Missionary Trip lesson

I kinda just taught this Bible lesson to my Sunday School class last Sunday, so I’m super behind on posting this, and technically this lesson isn’t Paul’s Third Missionary trip, but Paul heading home from his Third Missionary Trip.  But that doesn’t have the same ring to it.

So, last week Paul caused a riot in Ephesus and came this close to being thrown in jail and beaten again.

What I learn from Paul’s Third Missionary Trip

You can’t go it alone.  It’s as simple as that.

Half of this story is about people who help Paul, and half a dozen people who Paul changed their life traveling a big distance to come to say goodbye. (The maps are from Bible Study Guide for All Ages, you can buy the labels for the map separate if you want, or leave it mostly unlabeled as I’ve done)

Do you know what else I learned, God can give us supernatural bravery.  Paul knew when he left for Jerusalem he was going to be thrown in jail, and quite probably killed.  He was warned over and over again, and he still went.

I don’t know that I could do that.  My small group in Sunday School agreed with me, which led to a great discussion about God giving you the bravery to stand up.  I’m trusting if I’m in that situation God will give me that bravery because left to my own devices I don’t have it.

Paul’s missionary trips are a great excuse to pull out a giant map and have some Lego history.  I sent the kids to get figures and boats, and here’s what I got.  Not quite the super Biblical figures are they?

So, to recap Paul caused a riot in Ephesus, all of the craftmasters started yelling “Great is Artemis of Ephesus, and down with anyone else.  Let’s get him,” and thanks to wiser heads than Paul at that moment he was convinced to leave.

Several of the people Paul had served with heard Paul was heading back to Jerusalem (in one novelization I read Paul sends out notes so he can give them final instructions), and they all decide to converge on Ephesus and give Paul a proper send-off.

Paul and his mob head off and revisit all of the churches Paul had just planted.  Paul takes time to encourage everyone. At one of the stops Paul preaches so long a young man falls asleep and falls out the third floor window to his death (don’t worry it’s only temporary, Paul fixes it).  So, next time you think your preacher is talking too long think of Paul preaching through the entire night.

Paul sails through several different towns, minor enough they weren’t on my Wondermaps* Paul’s missionary trips map.  I’m guessing because he didn’t stop there long.

He sails past Cyprus, and lands at Troas, then travels down to Caesarea (where he gets one final warning, God really wanted to make sure he understood), and finally to Jerusalem.

Where, being Paul within less than a week of being there he caused a riot.

I found this absolutely amazing craft for Paul’s Third Missionary trip, fun printable, interactive element.  The kids colored them, adding in their own personality (Superman’s had giant moustache’s everywhere).

Then I went to put them together, and we had no brads.  I have no clue what happened to them, but they were nowhere to be found.  Much sadness.

completely unrelated side note, but I had to force this into my Summer of Fun Illuminations schedule because I forgot to schedule it in, it’s been one of THOSE weeks where I just didn’t plan well, or planned too much, I don’t know, but I’m tired, so I’m off to sew something or read a book.  Something non-technology related.
