Martin Luther Resources

A lot of ink has been spilled over the years about Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. There’s been a few films, and I’m rather surprised with the 500th anniversary there haven’t been more films these past few years, but I’m super impressed with the two Martin Luther movies I linked further down in the post. These Martin Luther resources are the ones I’ve used with my kids, or plan to use in the future when we cover this topic again for our history lesson.

Martin Luther books

There are several more books I could feature, but I opted to share with you one for each age range that I really recommend.

• Martin Luther by Eric Metaxas– Confession I haven’t read this book, but I have respect for the scholarship and writing of Eric Metaxas, this is also a book for high school or adults.
• When Lightning Struck– This is the book I’d suggest for your junior high kid to learn about Martin Luther. It’s got just the right amount of information and has a good pacing. Read my full When Lightning Struck review.
• Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed the World– I love the pictures in this book, it’s one of my favorite art styles for picture books.

Books for the rest of the Protestant Reformation

Courage and Conviction– I love this series, it covers church history giving most events a chapter, so it doesn’t give too much information to overwhelm a young learner. However, this time period has A LOT going on, so I think this particular book just covers a short time period and a lot of people that changed the landscape of the world.

Sorry, I thought I was going to have more, but my library didn’t have anything else, and I’m hesitant to just recommend based on Amazon reviews.

Martin Luther movies

I need to do some research to find more movies for this time period, but I have two favorites to recommend:

• Martin Luther– I love this movie, we’ll put it on from time to time just because we like the movie, though I will warn you it is very intense, so this is definitely for junior high and older.
• Torchlighters Martin Luther– I love this entire series, and right now this particular one is free on Amazon Prime (they change out their episodes from time to time). Your entire family can watch these videos.

Martin Luther lapbooks and copywork

Not too surprisingly there are a lot of Martin Luther lapbooks, copywork, and cool ideas (including some ideas for preschool).

• Martin Luther lapbook– I like that this is simple and laidback, which appeals to me.
• Martin Luther copywork for kids– it’s both in cursive and print, and I’m a big fan of copywork, even if my kids aren’t.
• Reformation Lapwork– this lapbook has some fun minibooks and a few notebooking pages, and does a great job with definitions.
• Martin Luther preschool lesson– I loved the activities she used to get little kids involved in the history lessons.
