As you all know, I’ve been working through the Bible both with my Sunday School class and at home. For my Sunday School class we just finished up learning about the Fruits of the Spirit. I’m always on the look out for good Bible resources, so when Carlie from So You Call Yourself a Homeschooler asked if anyone would like to review her book, Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit*, I thought for half a second and said “YES PLEASE!”
So what do I think of the Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit Bible study?
It’s a great start, and it’s laid out simple enough you don’t have to be a Bible scholar to complete it.
My favorite things about this Fruit of the Spirit Bible study:
- The definitions, I know it sounds simple and silly, but I liked having a simple definition to give the kids rather than just saying, “I can’t explain it, but it’s like this.” We all know what kindness is, but when it comes down to defining it, that’s hard.
- The skits for each one, yes they’re cheesy and silly, but kids love that.
- The extra verses to read through. You know I’m a Bible junkie, and so I loved the extra verses they gave to give you more information.
What would I like more of in this Fruit of the Spirit Bible study?
- Going back to the Bible junkie, I’d like more verses for the advanced student. This is a great study for the beginner to intermediate family, and is broken down great for elementary, but the addict in me wants more, hint hint, that means write more books.
- I’d love a few more discussion questions, I can talk a lot, and enjoy chances to talk with my kids.
So, what are my final thoughts on this Bible study?
I like it. Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit study* not as meaty as what I prefer, but it’s aimed for families with elementary kids. I know I have a tendency to give them too much information, so this is probably a good amount.
I really think this is a great study for families just getting into studying God’s Word. It doesn’t assume you know everything, and it gives great basic definitions.
