Old Testament Prophets for kids
The Old Testament prophets (to differentiate from any other prophets people might talk about) can be a difficult subject to talk about with kids. Most adults struggle to understand what is said in the prophets, let alone kids.
For this unit we chose to give each of the major prophets (and major is decided by book length, not importance) their own week. Daniel was given 3 weeks because there are many stories that are important and useful for young kids. The minor prophets were combined together into one week, with the exception of Jonah, because they cover topics that are hard to cover in depth with young kids. Jonah gets his own week because he is another of the prophets that has a lot of relevance to young kids.
Old Testament prophets, major and minor lessons
- Jeremiah– We learn from Jeremiah how to pursue God even when everyone else is against you.
- Ezekiel– God reveals his future plans for Israel and the world
- The Fiery Furnace lesson (Daniel lesson)– How to respectfully disagree with those in charge, even if it means you get in trouble.
- Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream (Daniel lesson)- The sovereignty of God, and how God plans ahead, not just thinking in the short term
- Daniel and the lions’ den– Standing up for what is right, even when it costs you
- Minor Prophets of Israel and Judah– God uses all sorts of people to spread His message
- Jonah– The reluctant prophet to Nineveh. Jonah teaches us God never gives up on us.
- Isaiah– While Isaiah is one of the earlier prophets, we put Isaiah last in the order because he makes a good transition point to the New Testament with his frequent prophesying about Jesus.
