Jacques Cousteau lesson

Prior to this Jacques Cousteau lesson, I’d heard of the man, but I hadn’t really known much about him or all that he did.  Jacques Cousteau is an interesting man, and I’m glad we studied him for our geography lessons, but he is also a good history lesson for Modern History.  I learned so much.

Things I learned in this Jacques Cousteau lesson

So I knew Jacques Cousteau, and for some reason whenever I think of him, I think of his full name, not his last, or his first, his full name.  That and it takes me a few tries to spell it correctly.

But, I digress, I hadn’t realized how much of our current scuba gear he invented, or helped design.

Like, he created an underwater camera because he wanted to be able to share with everyone his great love of the oceans.  Then he used that camera to create a wildly popular TV show.  I find this fascinating.

But, I did not show the kids this video, as fascinating as I find it.  Instead…..

Our actual Jacques Cousteau lesson

I think I just like saying Jacques Cousteau in my head, and that’s why I‘m having so much fun typing his name.  That and it’s a challenge to spell it right, so I keep typing it to see if I can.

Back on track, I found this absolutely adorable book, The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau, and fell in love with it.

Towards the end, it talks of Jacques Cousteau’s hope of living underwater someday, and I knew what we had to do.  Design our own underwater homes.

So, first, they had to draw their design so we had something to put in our France lapbook.  You can find that printable, as part of my super officially named “France printable” (find it on my subscriber page, join my newsletter, and I am oh so clever at names, can’t you tell?).

Then once they’d proven they’d drawn something, my kids all disappeared to design their underwater homes.  And since they all disappeared I have no pictures of the in-process project.

NONE, zero, zip

But, I do have a picture of Princess’ finished project.

I present to you the dolphin underwater home, it is portable, so you can follow whatever fish you are studying.

For whatever reason I don’t have pictures of the boys’ projects, but just assume they’re AMAZING!

More Jacques Cousteau lessons

So, finally getting around to posting this came about because Kylie over at Worldwide Classroom shared her Jacques Cousteau activity using the exact same book, and hers was so completely different and brilliant.  I love to see how other homeschooling moms use the exact same book I did in a completely different way.
